Mine-craft is lagging like hell?

Alright no matter what server i join i will experience a huge amount of lag. The map takes forever to load and it appears to be a bottomless pit there, also when i try to open my chests i'll be there for 5-10 minutes before the damn screen opens, also when i speak in chat it takes a while for my message to appear, any ideas about why this is happenin?
